The Apprentice: Zoe is fired for crumbling under pressure.

Zoe was ordered to leave the competition last night having failed as PM of Logic to get any orders for the team’s biscuit BixMix, whereas Venture, whose PM was Helen, sold £800,000 units to Asda for their little stars biscuits for kids.
Zoe’s error? Not going to the factory to make the product and leaving Tom and Melody to it.

Lord Sugar told Zoe, ‘I’m looking for someone to go into business with. You can’t perform in a task, then you can’t perform with me.You’re fired.’

As Zoe, a food retailer, walked out of the boardroom, Lord Sugar told the remaining candidates, Melody and Tom, Susan was let off the hook, ‘I’m flexing my muscles, as someone who is meant to be an expert in this field has failed. You get it?’

Logic’s failure of the task was put down to their poor quality product. Feedback from the supermarkets they pitched to, Asda, Waitrose and Sainsburys, was that the team had no clear target audience, their packaging didn’t stand out and their snap and share biscuit, half chocolate, half digestive, was good in principal, but left one person with a plain biscuit and the other with chocolate.

‘You should have broken it horizontally so both get some of the chocolate’, advised Sugar.

Before making his decision, Lord Sugar told Tom he was like a broken record with his ‘should have, could have, would have done’ speech.

Tom replied that it was a learning process. ‘It’s not school’, said Sugar.

‘I’ve got over you being a charming, nice man, but you’re not authoritative. What should, could, would have done is no good to me.’

Previously Sugar’s advisor Karen said to him that all they hear from Tom is he’s learning. ‘At some point he’s got to get it right’.She also warned that Melody needs to be carefully watched as her interaction with the other candidates is not good.

This was proved when she and Zoe argued on Asda’s shop floor before the pitch, and their bitching to one another in the boardroom.

Sugar told Melody he was concerned about her arguments with colleagues and that it never seems to be her fault?

Next week the teams go back to basics and set up their own market stall a’ la Alan Sugar.

Coming soon to ITV-Sextuplets:the little lambs

On Tuesday 5 July (9pm) ITV will air a moving documentary that tells the story of the first sextuplets to be born in Britain for 17 years.

Layla, Ellen, Matthew, Rose, Pippa and Eric were born 14 weeks early in May 2010 at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Their parents, Vicky and Andy Lamb, talk about how it was the most dramatic time of their lives, what with Vicky's difficult pregnancy and the sextuplets' birth. The couple were given the option to reduce the number of babies, but they decided to let nature take its course. Sadly Matthew died, and Vicky and Andy barely had time to grieve for their son because their other five babies were so ill.

Then, after seven weeks, Pippa contracted a severe infection and was too weak to fight it. But little by little both mum and babies grew stronger.

The film follows the couple as Layla is reunited with her brother and sisters in the special care unit, and the events during the emotional days when the babies finally leave hospital and come home. Vicky and Andy learn how to cope with the demands of four newborns and prepare for their first Christmas with their little miracles.

Bridemaids film review- a chick flick with bite

After a slow start and wondering and where the narrative is leading, Bridesmaids quickly picks up pace with its lovable characters and seemingly straight-forward storyline.

While it can't be compared to the comedy genius that is the Hangover, Bridesmaids offers a chick flick with substance and slapstick humour, which however is sometimes over milked. At the forefront of this is protagonist and maid of honour Annie, who is on a suicide mission to make her life a living hell after her cake business failed and her boyfriend walked out. No wonder, as she is left with a dead end job at her mum's friend's jewellers, sharing a flat with an oddball British brother and sister,  played by Matt Lucas, a Fuck buddy who makes her feel like shit and vying for her best friend's attention, Lilly, who is getting married.

Despite the obvious twists and ups and downs typical of the genre, every female around the world can relate to life biting you in the butt and a friend turning into a bridezilla as soon as she has a ring on her finger.

But what makes the film is the actor's connections and their portrayal of their stereotypical characters, who all bring something to the mix. Suck up Helen is your Olivia Palermo type, she has money but is extremely self-absorbed. Lillian's fiance's sister Megan is the fat and funny one who is a bruiser and somewhat of a liability, whereas Lillian is miss popular. Rita is the rebel of the group and leads shy and impressionable Becca astray, and Annie is the girl next door.

Of course like all chick flicks, the girl gets the guy, friends make-up etc, and they all live happily ever after. If only that was true of real-life?!

My verdict, Bridesmaids is your typical feel good film mixed with a pinch of real-life and dozens of laughs, but while it may be perfect for a Friday night in with the girls, I can't help but wonder if it deserves all the hype from the national media.

Bon Voyage: Leon is fired

Leon was sent packing on last night's The Apprentice by Lord Sugar for failing to do anything in the Parisian task but draw pictures to describe products to French retailers as he couldn't speak the language.

'All I've heard from you is that you don't speak French. When I first set up I did business with the Japanese and Koreans. I didn't speak the language then and I still don't. The majority of places you went they spoke English.'

'Leon I don't know what you were doing. If you wanted to be an artists you should have gone to Monmarte.

'I'm going with my gut instinct, Leon you're fired.'

Tom, PM of Logic, Melody and Leon all went to the boardroom for a last ditch attempt to save themselves from being fired. Their other team mate, Natasha, was allowed back to the house.

'Natasha you're a very lucky lady', said Sugar.

The team's biggest failure, Lord Sugar said, was their poor pitch to La Redoute, an appointment he had set up for the teams to sell their British made products, and only offering ten units of a teapot light when the company are the biggest retailer in France. La Redoute put in no orders.

Logic's independent sales didn't fair much better, having only sold 11,705 euros worth of their two products, a pop up cress postcard and a teapot light. Venture made 14,699 euros from the sale of their products, a carseat backpack and universal grip. La Redoute also put in an order of 214,000 euros worth of the backpack, thanks to an outstanding pitch from Helen.

'It's not just a loose, it's an anniliation', said Sugar. Venture have set a new record for this boardroom.'

Lord Sugar told PM Tom, who made no sales and originally wanted to sell the backpack, that he should have stuck to his guns and that Melody walked over him and Leon.

'I'm struggling to see how you can stay in the process', he told Tom.

Whereas Melody, who used her french language skills to her advantage, Lord Sugar said he likes, despite being ruthless and not sharing the appointments she made to sell their products with her team mates.

'Melody you hijacked the process but did lots of selling. I like your hunger for bulldozing and taking the lion's share, these people let you do that so good for you.'

Next week the remaining contestants are given the task of creating a new biscuit.

Jamie's Food Revolution LA-the chef becomes a role model for the city

It was team Jamie all the way on the last episode of the Food Revolution as the new LAUSD superintendent backed the chef’s healthy food initiative.

To get his attention, the celeb chef organised a cook off between some of LA’s schools, with help from the city’s top chefs, who each mentored a group of four students.

Jamie’s team from West Adams won the competition, what a surprise, for their capachio of beef, which blew the judges away with the quality and originality of the dish. The two other schools who got through to the final, Temple City and Santee, cooked steak.

The prize for the West Adams students was an all expenses paid trip to the Culinary Institute in New York, a city most of the teens have never visited before.

Whether or not the competition was a fix, Jamie was invited to speak to John Daisy, the new LAUSD superintendent, at their headquarters. Mr Daisy took Jamie to a school, having granted him access, and told the chef he planned to implement a policy change and get rid of strawberry and chocolate milk in schools in the next two months.

‘I can’t tell you how happy that makes me’, Jamie told him.

‘What happens in LA happens in the rest of the country.’

The superintendent also revealed to Jamie their plans for a new menu, which he said he hoped to devise with the help of pupils from West Adams and Jamie. ‘I’d love to’, he said as the barricades came down and he was able to step inside the school’s cafeteria and see the vegetable garden he helped to create.

However, the chef admitted he was still sceptical as he hadn’t seen the current lunches being served, or the central kitchen, but had to have faith. Speaking to the camera he said, ‘The battle’s not won. The power lies with you to keep the subject talked about.’

‘Progress is happening, but it’s not fast enough for me and shouldn’t be for you.’

‘It’s not just about me; you’ve all got to start stirring the pot and expecting more.’

Flavoured milk has now been taken off the menu at all of LA’s schools, say CH4.

New ITV series-Babies Behind Bars

Next Monday at 9pm sees the first of two moving, shocking and insightful films which follow the dramatic and emotional stories of a group of pregnant inmates at Indiana Women's Prison in the USA. With a 400 per cent increase in the number of women in America being prisoned in the last 30 years, prison births are becoming an increasingly regular occurrence, with thousands of babies born every year in the country's prisons.
Of course competition for places on the baby wing is fierce, which 20-year-old Donna understands, however her history of violence may mean that she misses out on a place for her baby. Serial offender Heather is also in the same situation, so she prepares for the agonising task of giving up her baby.

Episode 2 of ITV's Baby Hospital

Tomorrow's programme follows the stories of three single mums and how they struggle to cope alone with a sick baby.

One mum contracted swine flu when she was 20 weeks pregnant and her baby son was was born at 27 weeks old. She fights for her life, while her son unfortunately does not survive.

Dr Chris Dewhurst of the Baby Hospital says:, ';We have single mums with no dad, mum with a new partner, mum being supported by grandparents, so we’re used to all different types of families here.

'It’s extremely difficult having a new baby, but if you are on your own and you have a baby who is sick, or who’s been sick, then I think that must be very, very difficult.'

Baby Hospital is aired every Tuesday at 9pm on ITV.

The Apprentice- Glenn is fired

Lord Sugar last night told Glenn he had a problem grasping his unique selling point and a social club was not a business.

‘I’ve never come across an engineer that can turn their hand to business. You’re fired’, he said.

Glenn’s team- Venture, failed the task as they did not secure enough advertising space in their freemium magazine for the over sixties called ‘HIP Replacement’, which subsequently saw PM Jim, Glen and Susan go head to head in the boardroom after Zoe was sent back to the contestants’ house.

Sugar saved Jim as he said he had seen a ‘glimmer’ in him he like, despite calling the contestant deflective and manipulative, and placing the blame on him for the failure of the task, which Sugar put down to not negotiating with their first client Carat on rate card prices. A huge mistake for a launch of a new mag, claimed Sugar. He said to Jim the penny obviously dropped afterwards as he offered reduced prices to the two other agencies-Mediacom and Maxus, with Medicom spending £16.850 and Maxus £12,000 on advertising. Carat placed no orders for ad space.

Susan also narrowly escaped being fired with her past successes being her saving grace. ‘You need to show me you can do what you say on paper’, Sugar told the 21-year-old. He warned Susan that she needs to voice her opinions more rather than be a mouse, as describer by Jim, after she said she had told the PM to drop his prices and advised against the title HIP Replacement.

‘That name was bad’, confessed Sugar. It back fired. You read it as exactly what it means. ‘Out with the old, in with the new’, is even worse, like out with the old hip in with the new one.’

The features are also condescending he told them. The technology article about phones tells readers how to make a phone call, are you taking the piss? I’m in that age group and I know how to dial a number. And the cover, he said, was like Viz with old people wearing cardigans, so much for the sixties being the new thirties, as the mag’s strapline reads.

However, Sugar claimed that he was surprised the team had lost as they choose a good niche market, the over sixties, whereas the winners Logic, who secured £9,00 of ads with Maxus, £7,500 with Mediacom and a whopping £60,000, the whole magazine, from Carat, created a tacky lads mag-Covered, that had no USP and was described by advertisers as stuck in the nineties. It doesn’t reflect today’s male they argued.

‘Who would want to advertise next to a feature called Blow Your Load’, said Sugar, who couldn’t understand how the team secured a win.

Next week the contestants must use the French language skills to buy objects in Paris, phrase books at the ready.

Jamie's Food Revolution LA-the chef refuses to give in

Jamie fought back against the LAUSD last night by moving his kitchen outside Wesr Adams’ school after his filming permit expired.

He told the students on his last visit them and their families are welcome to come to his kitchen to learn about healthy food and how to cook. They can’t stop me on my own premises out of school time, he reminded them.

The naked chef also worked to convince Mike, who is part of the team that runs West Adams’ school, to become independent of the LAUSD and go it alone like one school an hour and a half’s drive away in Santa Barbara. The only problem is budgets, confessed Mike on a visit to the school. But the chef proved that healthy food costs can be kept to a minimum as the Santa Barbara institution have 70 per cent of pupils on free school meals and still make a profit by growing their own fruit and vegetables. Pupils even said they liked their school’s meals and marked them 10/10.

Mike agreed to go ahead with the changes, starting with introducing a vegetable bed into his school, something Jamie was not allowed to help with having been disallowed from stepping onto the school’s grounds.

During the programme, the chef also revisited the family he helped in last week’s show, and received an award from UCLA for ‘Public Health Champion.’

‘This year I haven’t errant it yet’, he said in his thank you speech. ‘It’s been the hardest month of my whole career.’

‘The only way brilliant change can happen is if all areas come together at the same time and invest in making social health change.’

However, next week it looks like Jamie could get his wish, as the newly appointed LAUSD superintendent agrees to a meeting and suggests changing (food) policy in schools.

Jamie's Food Revolution LA-the chef is under attack

Jamie’s filming came to an abrupt end on last night’s programme as the production company had their permits revoked by the LAUSD, causing filming to cease at the LA school.

‘Anyone would think we’re dealing with military secrets’, argued Jamie.

‘We’re going to fight the decision’, Mike reassures the chef.

‘We’re the good guys’, said Jamie.

The news came after Jamie was told by the school he could cook for all the pupils under the advisory programme, designed to get kids ready for college.
Earlier, the celeb chef took over a maths and social studies class. In maths he shown the pupils the effects of ‘bad’ foods can have on their health. The pupils were asked to choose a snack, chocolate, pizza, an orange, fizzy drink, and made them carry the weight on their back that they would put on over a month of eating the same types of foods without exercise.
In social studies, the pupil’s met their ‘future selves’, men and women who are overweight and suffering from health problems such as type 2 diabetes. The lesson hit home, with many of the teens admitting they worry about their family’s health.

The celeb chef also helped a single dad, who was struggling to provide his two sons with healthy meals, instead he feed them fast food nearly three times a week.

‘They (LAUSD) won’t stop me or the Food Revolution’, said Jamie. ‘I’m going guerrilla. LAUSD don’t own the kids or me. I’m going to find a kitchen right in front of the school for teachers and parents.’

‘If they wanted a war they’ve got one.’

Although the LAUSD told Jamie they wouldn’t be changing their decision at a meeting of the board the chef attended where he thanked the district for their time and co-operation.

‘It’s not a boutique café operation’, said LAUSD administrator Raymond Kortinez. ‘We have guidance we have to follow. I was at an elementary school in the week, all the food was proper. Not everyone liked it but that’s what we have to serve.’

‘You’ve attempted to make the school a stage. I’ve made the decision.’

Jamie asked he if could respond to the comments, the board shook their heads.

However, it looks like there could be light at the end of the tunnel next week as the LAUSD appoint a new superintendent.

The Apprentice-Ellie and Vincent fired in double eviction

It’s a dog eat dog world said Lord Sugar as he fired both Ellie and Vincent on last night’s show where the teams were set the task of designing and creating their own dog or cat food, producing an advert and pitching their ideas to industry experts.

Lord Sugar told Ellie he couldn’t go into business with her as he hasn’t seen much of her and she only pipes up to save herself when in the boardroom but takes a back seat in tasks. ‘She’s been here five weeks and I haven’t seen anything from her.’

Vincent, he said, was too in awe of the other contestants and playing a risky game. He went on to say that Vincent had brought the wrong people into the boardroom and wanted to make an example of him by firing him. ‘I’ve had it with Vincent. I like straight talking people’, Sugar said to his advisers Karen and Nick.

Natasha, who PM Vincent also took into the boardroom, was saved by Lord Sugar as he said she had done her job and couldn’t understand why Vincent had put her in the bottom three over Jim, whose error in choosing a name for the team’s dog food of EveryDog was the reason why Logic lost the task.

Feedback from the industry experts, which Lord Sugar based his decision on, was that Logic’s brand was ‘totally flawed’ and the name of the food insulting to owners as they see their pets as special. Sugar also asked the team why they choose to create a dog food that all types of dogs can eat after at their focus group a vet said it would be impossible to create food for all dogs as they need different things. ‘Who came up with the name’, asked Lord Sugar. Jim said it was his idea but not the meaning behind it, despite earlier claiming it was him who should be credited with choosing EveryDog. Lord Sugar told him he didn’t like people that tried to squirm out of things. But Vincent, who lingered on Jim’s every word during the task, earning them the name of Batman and Robin, stuck up for him and let him return to the house blame free. On leaving the boardroom Jim asked Lord Sugar is he could be PM for the next task to prove himself. Sugar replied, ‘I’ve got your card marked son. I’ll decide when your team leader.’

The winning team Venture, who created a cat food called Catsize, were told their brand had an unique selling point, but their advert, featuring a voice over as the star Ruby the cat, wasn’t well executed, however the foil packaging was very sell-able. Lord Sugar rewarded the team with a tennis lesson.

Jamie's Food Revolution LA: The chef gets sidelined.

Jamie’s mission to bring healthy meals to LA’s schools was closed down on last night’s episode, as he celeb chef was told the LAUSD had forbidden him from competing with cafeteria food, despite his students making and serving 150 meals to paying pupils.

‘Letting you in was a quarter of the battle’, Mike from the school management told him. ‘You’re not allowed to compete with cafeteria food, film cafeteria food or sell alternative meals during school hours.’

‘It’s a massive fingers up’, replied Jamie.

‘It’s up to you now’, a tearful Jamie told Spanish speaking volunteer parents at a meeting, before embracing his role as a culinary educator at the school and teaching the pupils where food comes from.

His lesson was clearly overdue as most of the 17-year-olds failed an elementary level test, claiming butter comes from corn, cocoa from a chocolate river, I wish, and honey from a honey bear, and it was multiple choice answers.

To prove his point further, the chef held a science lesson showing the teens what ingredients are used in their favourite sweet treat, ice cream sundaes. Over 200 ingredients, he said were present in their desserts, including varnish from bugs to coat sweets, human hair and duck feathers to bind store bought ice-cream.
‘It’s a lesson they will remember’, said Jamie.

The chef also won over Deno, the fast food owner of Patra’s, who agreed to serve only Jamie’s meat patties in his restaurant in return for a makeover of the joint and a new fat reducing grill. He even got Deno a spot on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to promote the new restaurant and burgers.

‘The real test is when Jamie isn’t here’, claimed Deno, who said his priority was running a business when he met with Jamie’s pupil Sophia, who told him how fast food restaurants are killing her family.

It was only when a local nursery approached Deno after a successful launch of the new restaurant, and told him how he is saving children in the area, that Deno really understood how powerful his decision was.

‘I’m going to push it (the burgers)’, Deno told Jamie. ‘I’m not going to pull the plug don’t worry.’

Next week Jamie has an even bigger fight on his hands, coming face to face with the president of the LAUSD. It could get messy?!
